Session 1: The Reason for Life

logos-columnThe purpose of this blog post is to supplement Session 1 of your Gospel of John Bible study.  John begins his version of the story of JESUS by saying, “In the beginning was the Word…” (John 1:1)  Why did John depart from the way Matthew, Mark, and Luke began their Gospel perspectives? 

John was bearing in mind his primary audience: the Greek (Hellenistic) culture of the 1st Century.
The Greek culture was spread to Europe, Asia Minor, and the Middle East by the young king
Alexander the Great in the 3rd Century B.C.  Much of this culture respected the rules of thought and reason, which had been taught by Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.  Later, when the Roman Empire took over, they incorporated this Greek philosophy into its culture…
